Scottish Landmarks

For the last 5 weeks, P6 have been learning about Scottish Landmarks. We have learnt about the Forth Road Bridge, the Queensferry Crossing, the Forth Rail Bridge, the Kelpies, the AWPR and the V and A. We have also taken part in group research and homework tasks to find out more about landmarks which interest us.

Here are some photos of the activities we have been up to:

We watched part of a documentary called ’50 Years Across the Forth’, took notes and used Google Classroom to create summary paragraphs.

We found out about the Queensferry Crossing and Adam shared these photos he took when he attended the opening.

Mr Crichton helped us with our map reading skills and we used these to identify bridges in Scotland.

We have worked in pairs to complete Reflective Reading Short Reads to find out more about our Topic. This is an example of a Blankety Blank. We had to read the article and decide on suitable words that would make sense in the spaces.

We also worked in groups to research and create a presentation about a Scottish bridge.

These are photos of a design challenge we took part in with Mr Crichton. We worked in groups to design a bridge using straws, sellotape, blu tack, string, rubber bands and paper. We had to ‘buy’ the materials and were given a budget of £100. We were not allowed to use more than 40 straws. The bridge had to be 40cm in length and we later tested the strength of the bridges using 100g weights.

Sketches of the Kelpies and the Leopard.

We also have been learning about newspaper features through the context of the AWPR.

Finally, yesterday, we started to learn about the V and A in Dundee. We watched some clips and learnt  to take notes under our own headings.

We are looking forward to sharing our learning during the whole school event in the next fortnight.
